System Types
The two main underfloor heating systems suit different property types, floor constructions, and budgets. We survey your property before recommending either, ensuring you get the right system for your specific floor build-up and heating requirements.
Best for single rooms, renovations, and properties without a wet heating system
Electric mats or cables are laid directly beneath the floor covering, requiring no pipework or screed. Installation is significantly faster and less disruptive, making it the preferred choice for bathroom refits, kitchen renovations, and retrofit projects in Derby terraces and semis.
Running costs are higher than hydronic per unit of heat output, but the low installation cost and simplicity make electric systems the most practical option for single-room applications.
Best for new builds, whole-house installs, and properties with a heat pump or combi boiler
Hydronic systems circulate warm water through a network of pipes embedded in screed or a dry panel system. Installation Process
Our process covers every stage from the initial site survey through to system commissioning and handover. We coordinate around your existing floor contractors and schedule work to minimise disruption to your household.
01 — Survey & Design
We begin with a free, no-obligation site survey to assess your floor construction, existing heating system, subfloor condition, and room dimensions. This allows us to design a system that delivers the correct heat output for each room without over-specifying or underperforming.
Our design includes a detailed layout drawing, a heat loss calculation for each zone, thermostat placement, and a fully itemised written quote. For hydronic systems, we also specify the manifold position and connection point to your boiler or heat pump.
02 — Subfloor Prep
Correct insulation beneath the heating element is critical for efficiency. Without it, heat is lost downward rather than rising into the room. We install the appropriate insulation board — typically 25–50 mm PIR insulation for ground floors and 6 mm for upper floors — before any heating element is laid.
We also ensure the subfloor is level, dry, and structurally sound before starting. For hydronic installations, we confirm the screed depth and drying schedule so floor finishes can be installed on time.
03 — Installation
For electric systems, heating mats or loose cables are laid to the design layout and connected to a dedicated circuit. All electrical work is carried out to Part P Building Regulations by our NICEIC-registered engineers, and the circuit is tested before we leave.
For hydronic systems, we lay underfloor pipework in the designed pattern, connect to the manifold, pressure-test the system, and commission it at the correct flow temperature before the screed pour or panel overlay is completed. We work directly with your screed contractor to coordinate timing.
04 — Commission & Handover
Once the floor covering is installed, we commission the system, programme the thermostat to your schedule preferences, and walk you through operating the controls. For hydronic systems, we carry out a full balancing process across all zones to ensure even heat distribution.
All certification documents — including the Electrical Installation Certificate, Building Regulations notification, and manufacturer warranty registration — are provided on the day of completion. We also leave you with a clear guide to the system and thermostat settings.

Divide your property into independent heating zones, each with its own schedule and setpoint. This means you only heat occupied rooms, reducing running costs significantly without any loss of comfort in the rooms that matter.
Advanced controllers adjust output automatically based on outside temperature and room occupancy. This is particularly effective with hydronic systems connected to a heat pump, maximising the efficiency of low-temperature heating and reducing energy bills year-round.

Engineered wood is the most compatible wood floor for use with underfloor heating. Boards up to 18 mm thick with a tog rating below 0.15 work well with both electric and hydronic systems, provided the surface temperature never exceeds 27°C.
Solid hardwood is more sensitive to temperature and humidity changes. Narrow boards (under 100 mm wide) from species with good dimensional stability — such as oak — can be used with careful system design and manufacturer approval. We always verify compatibility before installation.
Hydronic underfloor heating typically runs at flow temperatures of 35–45°C, compared to 60–70°C for radiators. This makes it significantly more efficient, particularly when paired with an air source heat pump, which performs best at low flow temperatures.
Electric underfloor heating is more expensive to run per kWh but has very low installation costs. It is most cost-effective in single rooms used for limited hours per day, such as a bathroom heated for 1–2 hours each morning.
No. Most modern condensing combi boilers are compatible with hydronic underfloor heating. We connect the UFH manifold to your existing boiler using a blending valve to reduce the flow temperature to the correct level for the floor system.
However, if you are considering replacing your boiler, underfloor heating pairs particularly well with air source heat pumps, which is worth factoring into the design if you plan to switch in the future.

Electric underfloor heating requires Part P Building Regulations notification, which we handle automatically as a NICEIC-registered contractor. You receive the Electrical Installation Certificate and confirmation of council notification on the day we finish.
Hydronic underfloor heating connected to an existing boiler does not typically require planning permission. If the system is connected to a new heat pump installation, Permitted Development rights usually apply, but we advise on any exceptions at the survey stage.
Both systems can be retrofitted to existing properties. Electric systems are the simplest retrofit option as they add minimal floor height (3–6 mm) and require no pipework or screed work.
Hydronic systems can be retrofitted using low-profile dry panel systems that sit on top of the existing subfloor, adding around 15–20 mm in total floor height. This avoids the need for a full screed pour and significantly reduces disruption compared to traditional wet system retrofits.
